Citizenship Activities

The Citizenship Department periodically organises events in which students can take part

The Citizenship Department has participated in a number of events early in 2012:

Barbican Theatre - Day of Difference

All of Year 10 were involved in this event, which puts a focus on racial intolerance and diversity. Students examined their values, attitudes and beliefs by talking in groups to young people from Plymouth who had experienced discrimination because of their appearance or culture.

Georgina Wilton wrote about her experience of the day: "I thought it would be boring, but it turned out quite interesting, open and different. I learnt not to judge people by their looks."

Camilla Carr

"Camilla Carr with her husband Jon travelled to Chechnya, Russia, to work as a volunteer in a centre for children effected by war in 1997. They aimed to make a difference in the children's lives through drama, art, song and other ways of self-expression. However, she and her husband were taken hostage and held for a large ransom by rebel fighters for 14 months. They have since been released and Camilla now gives public talks on her experiences and how she dealt with them."

Review: "Camilla came to my PSHEe lesson to talk to us. I found Camilla's story inspirational. She is a talented speaker who is easy to listen to and her story had the full attention of the audience from the moment that she started talking. Although she had the PowerPoint presentation in the background, I found myself watching her more than the pictures.

Her powerful story was very moving and I think took people by surprise, it made everybody think deeply about the important and life changing issues that she raised. It also helped us to see that even people who fight in wars and who can do terrible things are still human and I admire Camilla and Jon for seeing this. I found Camilla's story motivational, deep and very honest. Her courage amazes me and I have so much respect for her."  (Claire, Y11)

Global Xchange

Sarah Howell (Year 11), a Community Volunteering Qualification student, successfully arranged a visit to some Citizenship lessons of volunteers involved in a project in Nepal.

Other events have included the College's bid to become a Fairtrade School, and a Mock Election, which took place in the College on the same day as the Parliamentary Elections in May 2010. Read more...
