In March 2011 a group of History students from Years 9 and 11, accompanied by Mr Rumson, Mr Cripps, Mr Smith and Miss Woodman travelled to London, as part of their GCSE course covering the History of Medicine.
When they arrived in London they walked by the River Thames and had lunch by the Mayor of London's new offices - a very impressive office block.
Their first visit was to the Old Operating Theatre Museum (pictured above) which is part of the old St Thomas's Hospital. The Operating Theatre is the oldest in Europe and is found in a unique space in the Herb Garret of St Thomas Church. The museum is found at the top of a wooden spiral staircase in a barn-like roof space of an old Church. The Operating Theatre has been restored with original furniture, including a 19th Century operating table. The museum displays the history of herbal medicine, surgery, nursing at Old St Thomas's Hospital (the original home of Florence Nightingale's Nursing School).
Then the students visited the London Dungeon, which shows London's darkest and most gory history - an educational but chilling experience.
Although a very long and tiring day it was enjoyed by students and staff.
