Key Stage 5

AS and A2 History

In Year 12 students study 2 units.  The first unit is on ‘The Wars of the Roses and Henry VII'.  This paper is largely a knowledge based paper.   Students will be expected to produce 2 short essay style answers in the exam.  The exam will be held in January as this gives the student's an option of a retake in the summer if necessary.

The second unit is on ‘The experiences of warfare in Britain, 1854 - 1929'.

This paper looks at 3 wars: The Crimean War, the Second Boer War and the First World War.  The course of the 3 wars are considered but the focus is on how these wars impacted on society, for example, women, the press, the class system and medicine.

The paper is assessing your historical skills and you will be expected to analyse a series of historical sources and use your knowledge to answer two questions.

A2 History

Students complete a piece of coursework on Spain's Golden Age.  The coursework is made up of two questions, one of which involves the students researching contemporary sources.

The second unit is an examined unit and it is on Germany 1900 - 1945.  The paper is made up of two parts.  The first section is knowledge based answering an essay style question.  The second part of the course is looking at historical controversies and the evolution of the historical debate on German history 1900 -1945.  The exam is held in July.
