In addition, students are encouraged to consider studying Languages at University.
University of Bristol
In June 2011, ten students between years 10 and 12 embarked on a series of varying activities to engage learners of foreign languages, helping them to understand the opportunities that may become available to them if they wish to continue into Higher Education.
Our students had the opportunity to taste University study at Bristol University for a day. Activities led by Bristol University teachers were offered in 7 languages: French, German, Spanish, Italian, Catalan, Czech and Russian.
The students enjoyed different cultural and language taster sessions and had the chance to meet students from 5 other different schools with whom they could share their experiences in language learning. The day ended with a session to support students to develop their language learning strategies and stand out from the rest when applying for university.
The day was organised by Routes into Languages, a consortium of universities working together with schools and colleges, to enthuse and encourage people to study languages
It was a great day full of new and eye opening experiences for all.
Our students commented:
"Interesting insight into University life and all the choices we could make for the future."
"I thought it was a really interesting experience and it has helped me make my decisions for later life."
"I learnt how I can take up opportunities like working abroad and teaching languages to children. Touring the university and talking to the students has inspired me and made me excited about when I can start university!"
"Our trip really motivated me to do better with my languages."
