The college has promoted an accelerated curriculum so that students study Key Stage 3 in Years 7 and 8 and will take their SATs in May of Year 8.
Most students will take the dual award in science and by the end of Year 10 will have gained two Science GCSEs. They have the option to continue with science in Year 11 so they can obtain a GCSE in each of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Historically the science results have been well above the national average.
Biology, Chemistry and Physics are all offered at AS and A level and are popular choices with the students.
There are a number of activities offered to students outside lessons. Through Mr Grocott we have close links to the Space Centre, which offers a variety of events. These have included visits by Russian and American Astronauts as well as offering a GCSE in astronomy. In addition he organises a trip every year for some sixth formers to NASA in Texas and Florida.
Students are also offered the opportunity to compete in the International Space Olympics in Moscow. The college enters a team in the First Lego League Robotics competition. There is also a Science Club that each week will run after college.
The expertise in the department is such that we have a large input, both as subject leaders for science and mentors for other disciplines, into the development of trainee teachers. This involvement has ensured the department has an up-to-date knowledge of current teaching theory and practice.
