Library Information

Callington Library is unique in Cornwall as it is the only dual-use library in a secondary school in the county.

This means that it is both the college library and the public library for the area. It relocated to a former hall and adjoining rooms in April 2005 following extensive renovation/conversion work and we are very proud of it. All the shelving is mobile, offering the ultimate versatility. Reserved parking, easy disabled access and a public toilet and babychange facility are provided.

The library stocks approximately 20,000 books, plus the latest film releases on DVD, PS2/ XBox360/ Wii/ Nintendo  games, talking books and information packs. The library also offers free internet access, storytimes and children's holiday activities, a writers group, a readers group and a group for the retired. A Study Support Officer offers individual IT tuition to the public.

Staffed by a professional librarian, with a team of four assistants, the library is open 34½ hours a week to the public, year round, with even longer opening hours in term time for staff and students.

The library is heavily used and during an average day we welcome over 700 visitors. Students may come in independently in their free time, in groups from a lesson or as part of a class visit from any subject area. Every student has a Cornwall Library Service card, which enables him/ her to borrow up to 18 items at a time. As we are part of the County library service queries can be quickly forwarded to specialist staff at the County Reference Library, Cornwall Centre, Art libraries, Maritime or Performing Arts Libraries.

There are computer terminals available on both the People's Network and the college network, where work may be stored. The library has an activity room which can seat thirty-two people at tables for private study, personal reading or instruction. The tables can be removed in order to offer a flexible space for talks, demonstrations and activities. This room may be used by any group either within the college or from the local area. There is additional seating in the main library area and a hot drinks machine. A sunny conservatory offers a welcoming public entrance.
