On Sunday 5th February Callington Community College held a large event in association with Plymouth Raiders. Members of the Basketball Academy and under 16 Basketball squad were coached by players and had a question and answer session with them before the second leg of the BBL Cup semi-final against Milton Keynes.
The Dance Academy students performed twice during time outs in front of an audience of over 1300 people. Students from years 9, 10 and 11 were taken to watch the match as part of the schools' reward system.
Academy director Alan Yendell said ‘This was a great event where our students benefitted from our excellent links with professional sport organisations. The students loved the day and did Callington Community College proud.'
The sports academies at Callington have forged links with local sports clubs Plymouth Raiders and Plymouth Argyle and professional dance company Attik. They allow post 16 learners to pursue A level or level 2 or 3 BTEC courses in a wide range of subjects whilst following a Football, Basketball or Dance training and competition programme. The coaches from Plymouth Raiders and Plymouth Argyle have had an enormous impact on the development of the players. Attik Dance Company has proved to be a huge success within the Dance programme and the girls' performances have been superb.
