Callington Achieves Gold Partner School Status

The Youth Sport Trust has recently awarded Gold Partner School Status to the College

Callington Community College has been a Specialist Sports College since 2000. There is a total of ten members of staff within the PE department which includes an administrator and Sports technician. The department has been very forward thinking, gaining awards over recent years for innovation, curriculum design and excellent provision in hosting sport for all.

Due to school specialisms ceasing in the near future, schools and colleges now have to raise their game to be recognised for excellence within departments. The current PE team has been awarded the Youth Sports Trust prestigious Gold Award Sports Status for providing excellent provision and opportunities for all of our learners through excellent teaching; the breadth of study and ever evolving curriculum that proves to meet the specific needs of our learners year on year for both exam, vocational and core PE provision.

The department has close relations with Arena, led by Michelle Roberts which enables the college to have wider links with community sport, gain up-to-date PE and Sport developments and opportunities for learners to gain awards through leadership and coaching.

Kate Harrison, Director of Sport at the college, stated that "It is phenomenal working with such dedicated teachers and PE staff, all of whom have contributed in such positively different ways. We have all ‘bases' covered with regards to knowledge, exceptional pedagogy and expertise and we all seek to improve through sharing good practice and shared visions, the department has been highly regarded amongst PE training colleges as well as the Youth Sports Trust.

"There is real team spirit here and it's a total pleasure to accept this award as a faculty for all the hard work and commitment over the last few years that has gone into making us what we are and strive for. We really look forward to sharing successes with other PE departments throughout the UK.

"With the Olympic games coming to the UK this summer, the department is currently fully engrossed in developing shared values and morals of the games as well as hosting yet another whole college collapsed curriculum day in June.

"Our vision for the future is to expand more adult centred learning and apprenticeships which are closely linked to partners within the surrounding catchment areas as well as developing more courses, provision and space which will imminently have to expand even more".

The PE department continues forwards as a Partnership College with the YST, leading on cutting edge pedagogy and the development of a Leadership Academy as developing ideas in PE secondary conferencing in 2012-13 with Arena.

The Youth Sport Trust is an independent charity established in 1994 to build a brighter future for young people through PE and sport.

By achieving Partner School status Callington Community College has demonstrated its commitment to maintaining and developing the highest quality outcomes for PE and sport in the school.
