The College's recent Ofsted report has just been published and so it's official - Callington Community College is "outstanding" and among the first schools and colleges of 2012 to receive the inspectors' highest accolade under its new inspection framework. The previous twenty-seven judgments have been reduced to four key areas - achievement, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety, and leadership and management. Callington is "outstanding" in all four categories and "outstanding" overall.
Inspectors stated that the College is "outstanding" across the 11-19 age range: "The Sixth Form is outstanding. It is highly successful, annually increasing in size and popularity. High quality teaching and a curriculum closely tailored to students' needs promote excellent progress."
Principal Gary Lobbett and his team say that the new procedures felt like the inspection was "less done to, and more done with" the College. "The College's quality assurance measures were rigorously scrutinised by inspectors. Members of the Leadership Team and Curriculum Leaders were invited into lesson observations and the judgments of senior staff were consistently reviewed throughout the inspection."
Inspectors found that lessons "fully promote students' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, ensuring they develop a profound understanding of other beliefs, values and cultures. Their excellent social and moral development is exemplified in their outstanding behaviour."
"Callington is outstanding. Excellent teaching and your very positive response to the numerous opportunities that are offered mean that your learning is outstanding. The curriculum is fully adapted to meet your needs and requirements. Your attainment is well above the national average...You make rapid progress and your achievement is outstanding, both in Years 7 to 11 and in the sixth form...These remarkable strengths could not happen without excellent leadership and management. Many staff share the responsibilities of running and improving the College and the great success of their efforts can be seen in the extremely positive ethos of the school and your high achievement."
"I am delighted with the highly positive judgment by Ofsted inspectors and this recognition of the College's outstanding achievements. I would like to thank everyone who helps to make the College so successful -staff, parents, Governors and of course the students of whose achievements we are all very proud. We are also grateful for the continuing support of a wide range of partners both in education and other fields which contribute to and enhance our work. This judgment provides a firm foundation for further and continuous progress. Ofsted has confirmed that there is no sense of complacency here. We shall sustain and continually improve the very high standards established at Callington Community College".
