On April 24th a team from Callington Community College won the regional finals of Virgin Galactics National Competition. The team of five year 9 students had to design and make a prototype of a marketable product using technology or ideas from Virgin Galactic's Space Ship One.
Virgin Galactic will start flying paying passengers to space next year aboard Space Ship Two, and if the team win the national competition in July they will be flown as VIP guests of Virgin Galactic to California to meet with the engineers and pilots of Space Ship Two. They will also witness the launch of White Knight Two, the plane that will carry Space Ship Two.
The team's product was a combined arm controller and Head Up Display designed to educate the passengers on their flight into space. The judges from the RAF, Virgin Galactic and the Royal Aeronautical Society where impressed by not only the product, but also the team work and ability of the year 9 students.
