Present for the occasion were representatives of the College staff and governors and local businesses, as well as the Press and the BBC. Callington's Portreeve (Mayor) Mr Rick Lumley, and Deputy Mayor Mrs Karen Gold were present, and the guest of honour was Ms Amber Gell, space engineer from Texas who has spent several days at the College and the Space Centre.
The Head Teacher, Mr Gary Lobbett, gave a short presentation outlining the exciting developments in education, and the importance of preparing our students to contribute and compete on a global level.
Amber Gell then gave a talk about the NASA Constellation Project, in which she is personally involved as an engineer working on the Orion spacecraft. Students present in the audience were enthralled to learn that their generation will be the first to land on Mars, possibly as soon as 2020.
The CHiiL is a Communication Hub for International and Innovative Learning. Designed with the help of Callington students, the CHiiL incorporates a large, flexible learning and meeting space, a mezzanine floor equipped with computers, and a multimedia area that can be opened up to the main area or screened off for video conferencing and smaller projects.
With it's arched roof, translucent, full-height windows and curved mezzanine floor, this is easily the most spectacular part of Callington Community College.
Further information about the Space Centre and Amber Gell's visit is available on the Space Centre website.
The CHiiL is equipped to support students in their independent learning and represents an important stage in our development of outstanding 21st Century Sixth Form provision.
