Charlie Dart, aged 15, from Callington Community College has been selected as a regional runner up in Sightsavers international i-click awards 2008. Charlies photo, selected from over 600 entries submitted by aspiring young photographers across the UK, was displayed in a special exhibition at the.gallery@oxo on London's South Bank from 22-26th October 2008.
The theme for the competition run by leading blindness charity Sightsavers was 'the senses', with the aim of raising awareness of the scale of global blindness and what it might mean to live without a sense such as sight. Charlie's photo celebrated the sense of touch by showing her friend 'David' splashing in the surf on the beach.
Jo Mitchell, Schools Development Manager for Sightsavers International, commented:
"This was the first year that sightsavers has run the i-click awards and it turned out to be a very exciting competition. The judges were so impressed by the professionalism and artistic flair demonstrated by budding young photographers everywhere and the resulting exhibition will help us to demonstrate just how precious the gift of sight really is."
Sightsavers works with local partners in over thirty countries in the developing world to prevent blindness and restore sight, as well as campaign for equal rights and inclusion for people who are irreversibly blind and visually impaired. There are 45 million people in the world who are blind yet a staggering 75% of blindness can be prevented or treated, often through very simple and cost effective interventions.
