On Tuesday 22nd June the Principal of Government Secondary School GSS Jibi - Abuja, Nigeria and the Head of PE will arrive at Callington. The visitors will be met by the newly formed International Inspirations team. Students have applied to be a part of the international team in response to the number of international links the College has developed. The College now has links with every continent in the world and frequently hosts international visitors. The purpose of the visit is to support the development of PE and school sport in both schools in the lead up to the 2012 Olympic Games.
On Wednesday 23rd June Year 7 students will work with the local PCSOs as part of the Devon & Cornwall Police Force in Action day. The students will take part in the Speed Watch initiative; monitoring the speed of motorists as they pass the local primary school. This will take place from 10am - 12 noon at Callington Primary School.
Year 10 students have organised a ‘Feeling Good Looking Good' Festival for year 7 students on Wednesday after school from 3.15 - 5pm. The students will run a series of workshops for the year 7 students including nail art, wii sports, trampolining and face painting. It is hoped that the Nigerian visitors will teach the girls how to make traditional Nigerian head dresses as part of the festival.
On Thursday 24th June Callington Community College will host a World Cup event. This mass participation event will see all students split into the 32 World Cup countries. Based on the World Cup competition structure, they will compete against one another in four groups or ‘houses' Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth & Durban. The whole event is linked to the national ‘One Goal' campaign which is rooted in working together to make education a reality for 72 million children worldwide by 2015.
All the different subject areas are getting involved in the event in one way or another - for example, Maths will be keeping score and completing results sheets, English will be providing commentary, overseeing media coverage and producing match reports and Languages will be attempting to referee some of the games in foreign languages! It is hoped that one of our Nigerian visitors, Shehumar, who is a referee for the Nigerian national league, will referee some of the games too. All 900 students and staff will be involved in this exciting event, which is sure to be a great success.
Assistant Headteacher Michelle Roberts from the College stated ‘we are very excited about International Inspirations and we have planned what we hope will be an inspirational programme of events for both our visitors and our students here at the College. We hope we can further develop the link between the two schools and building upon our visit to Nigeria in March this year'.
