Callington Community College is launching the new Sport and Dance Academy after three local professional sports and dance organisations have agreed to work in partnership with the College.
Plymouth Argyle FC, Attik Dance Company and Plymouth Raiders are working closely with the Academy to help promote and deliver the Football, Basketball and Dance programme for 16-19 year olds. This is a unique opportunity to work with high quality professional sports people and for young people to receive a personalised sports package tailored to their sporting needs.
The Sport and Dance Academy aims to provide a professional, structured and challenging training and competition programme for individuals who wish to combine their academic goals with their sporting and dance aspirations. The new academy programme starts in September 2011, with football, basketball and dance being the first sports on offer, with others to be developed in the future.
Alan Yendell, Director of the Sports and Dance Academy, said ‘Young people are being given a wonderful opportunity to combine their studies at a highly successful college whilst enjoying their sporting and personal development through one of our Academy programmes. We are privileged and honoured to be working in partnership with three first class, professional organisations, which will provide added value and further opportunities to all our students at the college'.
Students will enjoy five hours a week of specialist training, coaching, performance and competition alongside their full time academic course of study. Students would need to apply to study on a course that is on offer within the college's sixth form curriculum. Students can study a wide range of subjects at both Level 2 and Level 3. These include specific full time Sport and Dance courses.
There is a chance to find out more about the new Sport and Dance Academy on Tuesday 16th November 2011, when the college are hosting an Academy information and Taster Session where the three professional partners will give an idea of the course through practical workshops and will be on hand to answer any questions you might have, starting at 4.00pm and finishing at 6.00pm.
Callington Community College are also hosting their Post-16 Choices evening on Thursday 18th November between 6.30pm and 9.00pm, where potential students can find out more about all courses offered in the Sixth Form at the college, have a tour of the facilities and meet members of the teaching staff who will be able to answer any questions about sixth form life in general!
