Callington Community College has had another successful Ten Tors experience. In total, 2,500 young people gathered at Okehampton Army Barracks to take part in the event in near perfect conditions.
The College entered 2 teams, a 35 mile and a 45 mile, consisting of students from Years 10, 11 and 12. The hours these students had put into training for the event over the winter was admirable and they often found themselves battling wind, ice and rain. All the teams started at 7am on Saturday 14th May. The Callington 35 team came in at 14.43 on Sunday followed fairly soon after by our 45 team, who crossed the line at 15.56.
This is an incredible achievement for all of these students as individuals and also as a team. As if Ten Tors isn't hard enough, our 45 Team had to take on the challenge the morning after Year 11 May Ball!
All team members travelled to Okehampton on Friday to go through scrutineering checks on their kit before they were able to plan their routes. Once these were successfully done, it was time to relax and eat as much as they could in preparation for the challenge ahead. This was also when four of the 45 Team were collected and taken to the Ball. They arrived back in camp at midnight and managed to get some sleep before their early morning wake up of ‘Chariots of Fire' through the tannoy at 5am.
Recognition needs to be given to all members of staff involved in this year's event. Without the work of Keith Hubbard, Chris Morrell and all those assisting, these students would not have had the opportunity to take part in this amazing experience.
