The Special Educational Needs and Learning Support department is committed to ensuring the inclusion of all pupils in the school and enabling them to fully access the curriculum and opportunities available to them. It is staffed by Specialist Teachers and Teaching Assistants, many of whom have additional qualifications and experience in teaching or supporting pupils with a wide range of specific learning needs.
Support
The team works both within the classroom, supporting individual pupils with Statements of Special Educational Needs and whole classes, and also in the Skills Centre focusing on areas such as literacy, numeracy, ICT and study skills. The College also has a Support Unit which offers carefully monitored behaviour programmes. Social Skills groups are also run to offer nurturing and help with friendship building.
Focus Group
In Year 7 and 8 we have a Focus Group which targets literacy difficulties and helps provide the pupils with coping strategies for everyday activities. The Focus Group is conducted in a small group setting with one teacher and one teaching assistant. These lessons are timetabled at the beginning of the year and will remain in place for the whole academic year where necessary. Pupils are also welcome to attend the Skills Centre at lunch and break times where there are opportunities for developing social skills and making new friends. Help with homework is also available both in the Skills Centre and at Homework Clubs after College.
Alternative Curriculum
The College has worked hard to develop an alternative curriculum for pupils in Years 10 and 11 who find it difficult to cope with the requirements of GCSEs enabling a personalised pathway to meet their needs. This includes Foundation Learning in English, Maths and Science and ASDAN Entry awards. Pupils are taught in small groups with high levels of adult support.
Parents of pupils with special educational needs are welcome to view the provision and facilities and to discuss their child's needs in detail with the SENCo . We are very happy to accommodate extra visits to our College during the transition process.
We enjoy excellent relationships with colleagues in our partner primary schools and every effort is made through our SEN liaison process to ensure transfer of important information from KS2 to KS3.
