Our welcome party of students and their families were eagerly awaiting their visitors at school. It was fantastic seeing our Spanish friends again after 5 months since our visit to Malaga in October. It felt almost like it had only been a few weeks, and really was quite emotional to see how incredibly happy they all were to see each other again.
The Spanish students spent the first weekend with their host families enjoying the British way of living and the food. During their time with us they enjoyed a great variety of outdoor activities such as a visit to the Eden Project, a visit to Plymouth, and tree surfing.
On Tuesday they visited our school and they were welcomed by our hard working International Committee of students. Also the Spanish students helped our GCSE students to get ready for their Spanish exams... What a success that was!
Friday was to be a typical day in an English school for the Spanish students but our fantastic PE staff and the Diploma students planned a real treat for them! All the students in the Exchange could enjoy a day full of activities that involved introducing our Spanish friends into cricket and hockey.
After a games session of dodge ball, the Spanish students took part in a good variety of PEPs offered by our staff - a great day in school!
For the evening activities, courtesy of Mrs Gold (Mayor and Portreeve of Callington) and the Town Councillors, Spanish and English students together with The Friday Night Project, were invited to an event in Callington Town Hall with karaoke, Wii fit , games and a free barbeque! Some of our Spanish friends even delighted us with typical Andalusian dances. - a great end to a lovely day.
On Saturday 2nd April our international group visited Boscastle and Tintagel being able to enjoy the best of our coasts and lovely weather! We all had lunch together at a local pub and our Spanish friends loved our pasties and fish and chips!
Sunday was a family day and on Monday the goodbyes arrived. Before departing the all the students involved worked together in a common project to gather all the good moments of the experience and further develop their language skills. All the students created some bilingual presentations collating pictures and memories, and uploaded them in our joint Wiki.
It was really sad to see our friends go but undoubtedly this really was a memorable and fabulous experience for everyone involved and something the students will never forget. Thank you to all the parents and staff involved; we look forward to seeing our Spanish friends again next year.
Previously in October 2010, seventeen students from Years 10 to 13, accompanied by two members of staff spent a week in Alhaurín de la Torre, south Spain as part of our first Spanish exchange programme with I.E.S Huerta Alta. Our stay was a complete success according to the enthusiastic accounts from our students and their Andalucian host families. Read more here...
