For example, Laura Martin and Heather Skelton decided to take a gap year and travel to Australia for six months...
They travelled to Sydney, where they stayed in a hostel on Bondi Beach for a couple of weeks, before heading out to Griffith, New South Wales, where they got work picking mandarins, and then sorting and packing cherries. Their aim was to experience seasonal work that they couldn't do at home in Cornwall (like waitressing or packing pasties!)
They spent Christmas in Melbourne where they enjoyed sightseeing in the city, especially the art galleries and museums, took a trip along the Great Coast Road to sub-tropical rainforest and saw koala bears in the wild. Then they moved on to Western Australia, where they did some grape picking and work in apple orchards near Manjimup.
Heather is now studying Architecture at Lincoln University, and Laura is taking extra A levels in order to study Pharmacy at university.
Hannah Sainsbury also took a gap year before going to Cambridge University to study Archaeology and Anthropology...
Hannah completed a TEFL (Teaching English As A Foreign Language) course, and then travelled to Vietnam and Cambodiain the Summer of 2009. In Ho Chi Minh City, she volunteered at a shelter for girls called the Little Rose Shelter, and taught a bit of music, art and English. Hannah used family contacts to arrange this; there are companies that will make arrangements for you, but they charge a fee.
Hannah is now enjoying her university course, and recently returned to the College to take part in the Callington Music Reunion concert.
We have started a blog, Life After Callington Community College, where ex-Callington students can describe their hopes, fears and experiences on stepping out into the Big Wide World. If you are an ex-student of the College and would like to take part, please email webmaster(at)callington.cc and request an invitation (please give your name and the year you left).
